This piece was done on Perspex, it is a three dimensional sculpture painting. Inspired by the beautiful story of Ray and his Encounter.
This is his story….
We did a trip on the Spirit of Freedom in February 2019, which was supposed to go to the Coral Sea.
The weather was not our friend and didn’t make it. We ended up diving the inner Ribbon Reefs which in themselves were fantastic.
Before I tell of my encounter, I want to stress I am the type of diver who looks but does not touch. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching the animal in it’s own habitat, so this encounter really surprised me.
We came to an area of beautiful reef. I was kneeling on the sandy bottom against a small rocky outcrop just taking it all in. A turtle has swum over to where my buddy and I were and literally sat on the rocky outcrop beneath me. He was within arm’s reach.
This is when it becomes surreal. I watched him for maybe a minute or so and nothing, he was just sitting there. I couldn’t resist, I put out my hand and touched his upper shell, he didn’t move. I stroked his shell, he didn’t move. As I stroked him gunk started lifting from his shell, so I continued to rub his entire upper shell with the flat of my fingers removing all the gunk which was on it
I finished rubbing his upper shell and he still sat there.
My buddy was filming with his Go Pro, so I was ecstatic at such an intimate moment was being captured. I was talking dribble to the turtle thanking him.
I rubbed him under his jaw and neck for one last moment. I sat back and just “took it all in”.
We finished the dive and returned to the boat. My buddy checked his Go-Pro. It hadn’t worked. I was so disappointed but on reflection I had it in my memory, my buddy backed me up to my other friends, so I soon got over it.
On returning to Cairns, my wife flew up so we could spend a couple of days there. Of course, I bored her to tears with my story. This in when things get weird….
My wife went for a walk around Cairns and found Under Art Gallery. In it was some of Petra’s works. Of turtles would you believe!!! She couldn’t wait to take me to see them. It was amazing. We ended up visiting Petra and telling her what had happened. She has created the perfect memory for me.
Inspired by the natural world, this Fine art collection is a combination of many materials and Mediums.
The works are predominately 3 dimensional, mostly created using recycled materials ranging from cardboard, electrical wire, newspaper, wool, fabrics, plaster, clay and oil and acrylic paint. Oil paint is Petra’s main painting medium, but she is always experimenting with different mediums to achieve that perfect effect, striving for a strong, secure and tidy finish.
Finished with a coat of Chroma Finish Varnish, which is providing a non-tacky protective coating, that also protects against mold.
The entire painting /sculpture can be dusted using a small soft (make-up like) brush.
